That just leaves nutrients. In the wild, plants have access to all kinds of nutrients in the soil they live in. But our indoor plants just live in planters with a limited amount of soil, and a plant may use up all the nutrients in its potting mix within a few months.
So we need to add those nutrients back to the soil in the form of fertilizer. Think of fertilizer like a multivitamin supplement for your plant! These vitamins allow plants to grow bigger and taller, put out new leaves, and those beautiful colors we prize in our houseplants.
What is fertilizer made of? (And the best fertilizer for monstera deliciosa)
Most fertilizers are made up of three main minerals important for plant growth: nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. The ratio of these nutrients in any given fertilizer is usually expressed in a series of three numbers on the bottle.
For example, if a fertilizer has 1-1-1 on the label, that means there are equal parts of those three minerals. One part nitrogen, one part phosphorous, and one part potassium.
A 3-1-2 fertilizer means it contains 3 parts nitrogen, 1 part phosphorous, and 2 parts potassium.
Plants need all three of those minerals, but different plants need different amounts of each.
